This week we take a look at the Neolithic. These places and byways were already thousands of years old when the Romans came to Britain.
Not far from Stonehenge, in the county of Wiltshire, lies the even larger Avebury stone circle. Though less complete - and a little less grand - than its more famous neighbour, Avebury boasts a more peaceful environment in which to contemplate antiquity, plus a handy country pub!
Skara Brae is a stone-built Neolithic village on Orkney's main island, and a much-visited ancient site, regarded by many as one of the most remarkable prehistoric monuments in Europe. It was accidentally revealed after being buried for 5,000 years.
The Ridgeway is an ancient trackway described as Britain's oldest road running from Wiltshire to the Thames at Streatley. It has been extended to Ivinghoe Beacon in the Chilterns to form an 87 mile National Trail.
La Hougue Bie is a passage and burial chamber secreted beneath a mound of stones and earth in the Jersey parish of Grouville. It is thought to be around 6000 years old.
On a limestone ridge just north of Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire, stand the Rollright Stones - dating back nearly 6000 years.
The Standing Stones of Stenness, in the Orkney Islands, are reckoned to be the oldest of Britain's many Neolithic stone monuments. The purpose of the structure remains unknown.
