The south west of England is blessed with three pockets of moorland - the two largest being Dartmoor and Exmoor. Exmoor, in West Somerset and North Devon, is particularly scenic, as it runs down to the cliff-ringed coast of the Bristol Channel and has some delightful fishing villages within it.
The small village of Selworthy is an impossibly picturesque spot five miles from Minehead in Somerset on the edge of Exmoor, nestled in a timeless rural landscape managed by the National Trust.
The Exmoor pony is the oldest native pony breed in Britain. There are approximately 3,500 of these ponies worldwide, of which around 350 still live free on Exmoor on the Somerset, Devon border.
Funicular railways have provided important links on steep inclines around Britain for the past couple of centuries. Famous amongst these is the Lynton and Lynmouth Railway on the coast of Exmoor, North Devon.
The Valley of Rocks is a dry valley that runs just inland parallel to the coast in north Devon, a short walk to the west of the tourist resort of Lynton. It is a popular destination, noted for its herd of feral goats, and for its distinctive landscape and geology.
Watersmeet is the meeting place of the East Lyn river and Hoar Oak Water on Exmoor, Devon. Several walking routes converge here. And when you arrive, there is an attractive tea room to greet you!
